About NearWord – Why I Built It

I wanted to read in another language without losing my place at every unfamiliar word.

My routine was: copy a word, switch to a dictionary, then find my place again. Browser extensions helped online. I wanted that same convenience in my PDF reader, games and subtitles.

NearWord grew out of that frustration. Point at a word, press a shortcut and see its meaning beside it. Then keep reading.

What matters to me

A dictionary shouldn’t need an account. Downloaded dictionaries work offline, without an account. AI Context is optional when a word’s meaning depends on the sentence.

You control your history. History stays on your device, with exports to Anki, CSV and JSON.
